Poipu Crater Condo Kauai Hawaii

Kaua'i Beaches

SOUTHEAST BEACHES

NW Map

Kauai's south shore is abundant in easily accessible beaches and the sun worshipers that prefer them. Although good snorkeling and surfing are readily available much of the year, the chances of sharing the beach and waves tend to be greater here than anywhere else.

Po'ipu Beach

Poipu Beach

This park in Po'ipu has it all: sand, surf, snorkeling, a lawn, facilities and plenty of "children" of all ages. The beach is divided by a narrow sand bar and snorkeling to the right of the bar is quite good. The water to the left of the sand bar is fairly protected and is generally an excellent area for young ones to wade and splash about. The facilities consist of very nice picnic cabanas, restrooms and freshwater showers to wash off the sand and salt. If you forget to bring a lunch, no worries. Brennecke's Beachside Deli is just across the street with plenty of good stuff to choose from.

Shipwreck Beach (Keoneloa Beach)

Shipwreck

Just past the luxurious Hyatt Hotel (but before the Po'ipu Bay Resort Golf Course), is a short paved road leading to Shipwreck beach named after an old wooden shipwreck many years ago. The beach itself is relatively protected due to Makawehi Point jutting out into the ocean and it is also from this point where you can see brave souls jumping to the water below. The area is also a popular body boarding spot. The "public" facilities consist of nice restrooms and a freshwater shower.

Maha'ulepu Beach

This is one of our most favorite beaches which is becoming more and more popular each year. Again, the only way to reach this beach is by old, dirt cane roads. To get there, basically follow Po'ipu road past the Hyatt and golf course which will quickly turn into gravel/dirt. You'll pass CJM Horse Stables on your right and will eventually meet a T-intersection in the road. Take a right at the intersection and follow the road to the end (you'll see an empty shack to your right where a guard used to require a signed waiver). Maha'ulepu has heavenly white sand that extends for a couple of miles and there are good areas for swimming and snorkeling. If you're lucky, you may also see an endangered Hawaiian monk seal sunning itself on the beach. There are no facilities of any kind at this beach.
